Biodiversity Summit Simulation: Russian Position

  1. Russia supports the first item. Russia possesses vast natural resources that it does not want to lose control over.
  2. Russia supports the second item, so long as the outside world is willing to support such a biodiversity protection program. As a developing nation, Russia does not want to see its development arrested by cumbersome and expensive environmental laws.
  3. Russia supports the third item, so long as it does not facilitate foreign takeovers of Russian industries.
  4. Russia supports the fourth item.
  5. Russia opposes the fifth item. United Nations dues are already too high, especially for developing nations. Russia proposes that the treaty be monitored by outside scientists who will review compliance annually, much like the various environmental summits already held.
  6. Russia would like to have the member nations make such reports public, as it opposes the creation of any oversight body.
  7. Russia opposes the creation of any such oversight body.
  8. Russia opposes the creation of any such oversight body and will not pay for one that might be created.
